Our History New Hope Assembly was founded in October 1990 by Pastor James Weaver and his wife, Susan. At that time, the Iowa District of the Assemblies of God asked Pastor Weaver to start a church in Urbandale. The former Bethesda Temple became the site of the new church. The church membership has grown to more than 1,400 with an average Sunday morning worship attendance of more than 700.

The original 40' x 80' church building was expanded in 1995, which added 20,000 square feet. With the generous and faithful giving of its members, the 20-year $1 million mortgage was paid in full in just 5 years. In 2004, a youth center was constructed with a full-size gymnasium, kitchen and youth chapel (seating for 250), which also serves as a banquet/reception facility.

New Hope is a missions-minded church. We support more than 80 U.S. and foreign missionary families and projects. New Hope is listed among the top missions-giving churches in the Assemblies of God.

New Hope has been one of the fastest-growing churches in Iowa. Pastor Weaver attributes the membership growth to the sincere, hardworking people who place an emphasis not so much on the practice of religion in a public setting, but on a relationship with Jesus Christ and on Christ-like relationships with each other. Weaver believes he is blessed to pastor such wonderful people. He and Susan are very thankful for the tremendous pastoral team that serves with them in ministry. No words can explain the unique unity and love that exists among us all. It is truly a blessing.
